At 0230 we had to pull away from the coast in order to clear the coast reef on the eastern side of the Blambangan Peninsula. At 0231 gunfire was seen to port and a few seconds later splashes, apparently from five inch guns from size of splashes were seen about one thousand yards short.56

All ships opened fire with four inch guns at this time. A running gun fight of about five minutes duration ensued. This vessel fired a total of thirty-one rounds with two guns. The forward gun was not used due to the tightness of the navigation and the necessity for having good visibility on the bridge. No hits were observed and apparently we were shooting about 500 yards short. The target was crossed several times by firing spotting ladders.57
